Orienteering events are held nearly every weekend of the year in the South East of England and often on weekday evenings. At most of these events there are courses suitable for young people of all ages and abilities. Experienced orienteers (including the County Advisor) are always on hand to offer help and advice.
The local orienteering club for Sussex is Southdowns Orienteers; a full fixture list can be found on the clubs website, www.southdowns-orienteers.org.uk. During the summer the club holds short course events in parks on Saturday mornings which are ideal for those new to the sport. Southdowns Orienteers hold weekly training sessions every Tuesday which are geared to the development of junior orienteers especially those new to the sport. Details can be found on the club’s website.
If you intend to come along to an event please get in contact with out county advisor(details below) at least two weeks before an event so that everybody taking part can be registered in advance and also to ensure that enough maps are printed. It will also mean that there is somebody at the event to help you get started.
Southdowns Orienteers hold a winter series of events around the streets of towns in Sussex. Under British Orienteering Federation rules these events are for over 16’s only. However the maps and courses can be reused for activities close to your HQ.
Areas which have been mapped include Brighton, Hove, Cuckfield, Crawley, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, Horsham (SW and SE), Lindfield, and Southwater.
Please contact our County Advisor (see below) if you would like to use one of these.
There are other clubs which occasionally hold events in Sussex
