The Scout Association subscribes to the national standards set by the British Caving Association training committee. The main recommendation is that cave leaders should be experienced cavers because the underground environment is not one in which the normal Scout Leader can work. Details of the Scout Associations guidelines on running Scouting activities in caves and mines scouting can be found here. Members leading Caving as a Scout Activity will need to hold an Adventurous Activity Permit for caving. The Assessment Checklist for caving shows the areas that the Leader will need to demonstrate competence in to an Assessor.
We are fortunate in West Sussex to have such an experienced and qualified Caving team who are at the forefront of caving exploration worldwide, not just in the UK. The team are always willing to offer caving trips which suit the age and experience of the Scouts and regularly run events ranging from straw bale “caves”, trips underground in Merstham Mines to trips to Somerset and beyond.
