Hill Walking

Details of the Scout Associations guidelines on running hill walking activities in scouting can be found here. Members leading an hill walking event as a Scout Activity may need to hold an Adventurous Activity Permit. The Assessment Checklist for Hill walking shows the areas that the Leader will need to demonstrate competence in to an Assessor.

The National Governing Bodies for hillwalking are: Mountain Training UK and the British Mountaineering Council

The three main hiking event that are held in the area every year are:-

The Sussex Downsman is held over the weekend a weekend in early October each year. This is a very well organised, challenging hike with categories for all ages (including leaders) and abilities. If you, or your Scouts, have never taken part in this hike before, why not give it a try this year.
The Overland Hike is run by East Sussex Scout County and is held in March each year. This event is for Scout Troops and Explorer Scout Units (teams of 4).
The Charlton Chase night hike is held on the South Downs in January, run by West Sussex County Council. Teams of four young people (aged 15 to 21) undertake to complete a course through the Charlton Forest requiring navigational skills and team work if they are to succeed.
